Research summary
Does interval training improve the exercise capacity of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis patients in a pulmonary rehab maintenance class in comparison to usual care?
This study aims to investigate whether the use of a cardiovascular interval training session into a pulmonary rehabilitation maintenance class improves exercise capacity and quality of life in patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). Exercise capacity will be measured using the incremental shuttle walk test (ISWT) and health related quality of life will be measured using questionnaires. Interval training will be conducted using the treadmill once a week in a supervised pulmonary rehabilitation maintenance class. The patient will then be advised as to how this training can be implemented in a walking programme at home.
End of study ISWT and questionnaire results will be compared to the individual patient’s results before completing the interval training. It is necessary for this study to be carried out in order to optimise pulmonary rehabilitation exercise prescription for this patient group who currently have limited treatment and management options for their condition. This will also give us further insight into the effectiveness of interval training in patients with respiratory conditions.
