The government has published a report on the progress it has made to implement the Lord O'Shaughnessy review of commercial clinical trials and and how it is going further and faster to transform the UK clinical research system, which includes a commitment to achieving the most ambitious reduction in clinical trial set-up time in British history.
We’ve welcomed the report, and we also share how we are supporting the government’s plans through our work with the the cross-sector UK Clinical Research Delivery programme.

Dr Janet Messer, Director of Approvals Service at the Health Research Authority“We welcome and endorse the government’s commitment to achieve the most ambitious reduction in clinical trial set-up time in British history. This will help to ensure that more patients have the option to take part in developing new treatments and diagnostics. Completing research faster means that its findings can be used to improve care sooner, and will also help the government to realise its ambitions to transform the NHS and make the UK a life sciences world leader.
“We are supporting the government’s plan through our work as part of the cross-sector UK Clinical Research Delivery programme, which aims to streamline and reform the delivery of clinical trials. In line with our statutory responsibilities, we are taking action to coordinate and standardise practice to remove duplication across the NHS and make study set-up consistent and efficient.
“The recent publication of the government’s 10 Year Health Plan and Life Sciences Sector plan signals a very exciting time for our sector, and we are committed to supporting the government’s missions by making it easier to do research that people can trust.”
