Our response to a new report on the value of non-commercial clinical research

Last updated on 19 Sep 2025

The Association of Medical Research Charities (AMRC) and Wellcome have published the findings of an analysis by Frontier Economics of the value of non-commercial clinical research.

The report shows the role of non-commercial clinical research as part of the research ecosystem, contributing to UK growth, the NHS and improving lives. It finds that clinical research funded by charities and the public sector contributed £72.7 billion to the UK economy between 2014 and 2024.

Responding to the launch of the report, Matt Westmore, Chief Executive of the Health Research Authority, said:

This report showcases a key strength of UK clinical research – the uniquely interconnected research system, supported by both commercial and non-commercial funding. This environment is globally distinctive.

It underscores the vital contribution of non-commercial funders, including medical research charities and the public sector, while also recognising the inextricable link between commercial and non-commercial research. Together, they deliver enormous benefits for patients in the UK and around the world, as well as making a major contribution to the UK economy.

It is important that this investment can make the greatest impact possible to improve people’s lives.

That is why we are working as part of the cross-sector UK Clinical Research Delivery (UKCRD) programme to streamline and speed-up clinical trial delivery. We want to make the UK the easiest place in the world to do excellent health and social care research that people can trust.

That includes addressing issues that are experienced disproportionately by commercial funders, who are often running research globally under tight time constraints, and have to navigate different systems in different countries, as well as actions that will improve the system for everyone.

The UK benefits when all research can be started and completed faster so that it can improve care faster, whoever funds it. We’re looking forward to continuing to work with AMRC as we take forward our new strategy.
