The Health Research Authority (HRA) recognises and values the essential contribution of volunteer Research Ethics Committee (REC) members to its service, and is committed to providing support, training and guidance to ensure that they can undertake their roles successfully. The HRA supports REC members by providing:

  • robust recruitment and appointment processes
  • induction training
  • mentorship scheme
  • on-going training including chairing skills
  • up to date and accessible written guidance and policies
  • regular communications relating to RECs and the review of applications
  • support from HRA managers and staff

REC members are expected to perform their role in line with the volunteer agreement and review research documents in line with the REC policy document and the standard operating procedures for RECs.
