Appendix A: Examples of REC membership issues
Examples of membership issues that may require to be addressed below, include but are not limited to:
Issues requiring resolution
- not meeting the minimum meeting attendance expectation
- not meeting the member training expectation
- having difficulty understanding and / or working within the remit of a REC
- having difficulty understanding and debating the relevant ethical issues
- persistent lateness or not submitting apologies
- lack of awareness of guidance leading to poor practice
Concerns about conduct
- known breaches of SOPs
- dealing with HRA staff, applicants and or fellow members in a discourteous way or in a way that lacks respect of diversity of views
- failing to manage or delete documents in the appropriate way
- failing to amend conduct as requested by a member of HRA staff and /or a REC Officer
- failing to comply with guidance leading to conduct issues / poor practice
Serious concerns about conduct
- failing to disclose a significant interest in a study
- disclosure of confidential information about individuals or studies
- serious breach of SOPs
- dealing with HRA staff, colleagues or applicants in an abusive or aggressive way
- acting in a way which is, or communicating views which are, discriminatory or acts of harassment
- fraud such as falsification of expenses
- serious or relevant criminal activity
- findings of Professional Body
- suspension from professional role
- speaking or presenting personal views under the guise of the HRA within the public domain
- inappropriate or discriminatory comments on social media or at events that either bring the HRA into disrepute or could reasonably be expected to bring the HRA into disrepute
