Strategic aim 3: Developing a pro-active strategically focussed organisation

Last updated on 19 Mar 2018

The HRA was established to protect and promote the interest of patients and the public in health and social care research. A large part of achieving this has been through a focus on policy, guidance and enabling high-quality research to take place when reviewing research study applications through a well-run research approvals and ethical review service.

The HRA has an important role to play in the research system

We aim to:

  1. Investing in strategic intelligence and responding to opportunities
  2. Increase our visibility and understanding of who we are and how we work with others
  3. Align our role and ambition with other key stakeholders

We recognise that we are part of a wider system of bodies and parties in the research landscape and that working in collaboration with others can enable us to do more collectively than we can each achieve on our own. This has been at the heart of our way of working, leading where we should, contributing and supporting others in areas where they lead. To increase our impact and effectiveness we need to further raise visibility of who we are and how we work.

Investing in strategic intelligence and engagement to identify and respond to opportunities, including those from Brexit

Having a research system that works well so it enables high quality research to take place contributes to UK competitiveness. We have a key role within the research system in enabling high quality research to take place through our Approvals service, including ethical review. Researchers want to get their research started and implemented as quickly as possible. With increased strategic intelligence we can identify more opportunities to ensure we are able to adapt and work well with others to keep the UK’s research system as effective and attractive as it can be which benefits patients and the public too. Over the next 5 years we will strengthen our strategic relationships to help us do this.

Increase the visibility and understanding of who we are and how we work with others

Through new and existing networks, increasing the profile and reach of our policy work, giving more visibility to work with partners on key topics of interest.

Align our role and ambition with other key stakeholders

We will ensure we continue to work with key partners and stakeholders to keep our role and ambition aligned to enable us to work effectively together and focus on where we can have most impact.
