Data collection arrangements
This is a national, multicentre, prospective, UK registry called the UK-ENDOMAB. This registry aims to determine the safety and efficacy of metabolic and bariatric endoscopic procedures used in the treatment of obesity and related complications. The objective of this registry is to collect anonymised patient demographic, clinical, procedural, and follow-up outcome data on the use of metabolic and bariatric endoscopic procedures in patients with obesity and/or obesity-related complications. Data will be collected from patients who have undergone, or are planned to undergo, a primary or revisional bariatric and metabolic endoscopic procedure within the UK following written informed consent. Anonymised data will be collected by participating investigators and will be uploaded and stored on a secure, password-protected, web-based application (REDcap) that has been developed for investigator-led research projects.
Research programme
Obesity is a major health problem in the UK affecting more than 25% of adults. Obesity promotes the development of many serious diseases including diabetes, heart disease, and kidney disease. Traditional weight loss methods like low-calorie diets and increased exercise offer short-term benefits but are challenging to sustain due to powerful biological mechanisms, making sustained weight loss difficult for most individuals. Consequently, bariatric surgery, which is highly effective, becomes a consideration for many, although it carries risks, and not all are willing or eligible for such procedures. To address this, new obesity treatments completed with an endoscope have been developed. An endoscope is a thin flexible tube with a camera at the end, which is inserted through the mouth into the stomach and small bowel. These procedures, while effective and low-risk, are relatively new and limited in the UK, with only a few specialists performing them. Due to these limitations, the aim of this registry is to obtain real-world information on the safety and effectiveness of endoscopic treatments for obesity. We hope this will improve our knowledge about treating obesity with these approaches, potentially paving the way for increased access and funding for these less invasive obesity treatments.
