Non-Executive Director appointments to the Health Research Authority

Graham Clarke, Dr Allison Jeynes-Ellis, Professor Deirdre Kelly and Professor Nalin Thakker are appointed as Non-Executive Directors of the Health Research Authority with effect from 1January 2015 when the Health Research Authority will be established as an Executive Non-Departmental Public Body.

Graham and Allison are appointed for three years and Deirdre and Nalin for two years. Graham will also be responsible for chairing the Health Research Authority’s Audit Committee. The appointments will involve a time commitment of 2 to 3 days per month. Remuneration for the role will be at a rate of £7,883 per annum, with the Audit Chair receiving £13,137 per annum.

Dierdre Kelly is also an Audit Committee Member of the General Medical Council and an Associate Non-Executive Director at Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust.

Professor Thakker served as a Research Ethics Committee member and is a former member of the National Research Ethics Advisors Panel.

Dr Jeynes-Ellis has been reappointed for a second term, and Professor Jonathan Montgomery will continue as Chair.

These appointments are made in accordance with the Code of Practice for Ministerial Appointments to Public Bodies, issued by the Commissioner for Public Appointments. Appointments are made on merit and political activity played no part in the selection process. However, in accordance with the original Nolan recommendations, there is a requirement for appointees’ political activity (if any declared) to be made public. None have declared any political activity.
